The south of Mallorca / Llucmajor
Llucmayor, the largest Mallorcan municipality in terms of area, stretches across a unique and expansive area in the south of Mallorca. Numerous smaller fincas dot the gently rolling plains. The flat interior of the municipality leads to expansive sandy beaches or rises abruptly to a halt at high cliffs. Not only the temperate Mediterranean climate of this zone and the proximity to the airport make this region of Mallorca truly special, but also the beautiful bays and the long sandy beach that stretches all the way to Palma. All of this contributes to a rather tranquil, rural, yet diverse lifestyle.
Beaches in the south of Mallorca
With a coastline of more than 45 kilometers, you're sure to find the ideal beach for you. Whether you prefer a more crowded and sprawling beach or more secluded, small, rocky coves, Llucmayor has it all. Not only can you enjoy peace and quiet here, but you can also take advantage of numerous leisure and sports activities. The largest and busiest beach is S'Arenal, located in the southwest of Llucmayor. This is where the island's German tourist hotspots have been located for many years.
Other very popular beaches are Cala Blava, Maioris-Badia Blava, and Cala Pi. A particularly charming place is S'Estanyol de Migjorn, a former fishing village located opposite the island of Cabrera and known for its unique, azure coastline.
Markets in the South
The region also has some typical Mallorcan markets. A very well-known market in the area is the weekly market in the town of Llucmayor. Things get busy here very early in the morning. Traders from all over the island set up their stalls and wares, and a lively hustle and bustle begins. On Fridays, in addition to the weekly market, there is also a flea market, which brings life to the Plaza de España at the weekend. If you only want to visit the weekly market, you can also go on Wednesdays and Sundays. S'Arenal, Les Palmeres, Badia Gran, and Cala Pi also have traditional fruit and vegetable markets. You can find out which days these are held on site.
Outdoor-Activities
There are numerous excursions to be had in the surrounding area. For golf enthusiasts, there are two golf courses, Maioris and Marriott Son Antem Golf Course, both extremely popular among golfers in the region. You can improve your handicap on these two well-maintained courses amidst beautiful scenery.
City walks in Llucmajor
On a stroll through the city, you'll discover many insider tips. The entire center is a World Heritage Site. Numerous mansions give only a hint of who lived here and in what splendor. The town hall, the Church of Sant Miguel, and the Monastery of Sant Bonaventura are also very interesting. A mixture of culture and history surround the city and its monuments, one of which is the monument to Jaume III, erected in 1927 on the street of the same name. For those with a sweet tooth, there's the traditional ice cream company "La Fabrica de Chocolate" just around the corner, which defies the tropical temperatures and produces chocolate in all flavors.
Church
The old parish church has already seen 750 years of history. The first church on the same site was built in the 14th century. This was later replaced by the current church. The successor building was built around 1784 in the Gothic style. Today, many sculptures and stained-glass windows still remain in the church's seven rooms. A very high-quality organ fills the church with Christian sounds. In 2004, a museum was established in the church's rooms. It contains old relics from the church's long history.
Nautical
The Club Nàutic s'Estanyol, next to the harbor facilities, has a visitor center that is of interest not only to tourists but also to maritime researchers. Larger than the aforementioned Club Nàutic s'Arenal, it offers over 600 berths and a unique atmosphere for tourists. Boat rentals are also available, allowing you to take self-guided tours and see places that are otherwise rarely visited (a license is required). Maps and other information brochures are available.
Hikes
A variety of hikes are offered around Llucmayor. Pine-forested trails offer a unique insight into the region's flora and fauna. Despite the advances made by humans in recent years, culture and customs that have been preserved for centuries still exist here. Most hikes are only 10 kilometers (6 miles) long. Occasionally, small elevation changes of up to 200 meters (650 feet) must be overcome. Because the terrain is slightly hilly, most tours are fairly easy. Long and short versions of the various tours are offered, providing a glimpse into the lives of the locals.
